Buy now! Consumerism as a replacement of bonding rituals

This is it. While searching for a more efficient way to pack my suit case, I bumped into this video. Which made me think how deep the American Societies have been permeated not only by the free-market economy and Corporations -that's ok for me by the way- but a progressive void of rituals that may anchor important family and individual and community moments into persons' meaning-making.
The following video shows a woman calling a live TV shopping show, while her daughter is giving birth to her first child. Amazingly it's in and through purchasing language and actions that both persons, the coming-to-be grandmother and the show presenter, harbor the birth of a new family member.
