Esto escribí hace un par de meses en un grupo de investigación etnográfica en LinkedIn.
1) emic/etic is just a didactic distinction. It's a way of showing a subtle though deep difference between two guys that have different repertoires to enact during a situation. They will engage, sustain, read other's minds, remember, see, feel, and talk and listen during the same situation. I'm thinking of Quine's "gavagai" example, where a man points a rabbit. Does he mean the rabbit? the actions of the rabbit? this rabbit or the category rabbit?, etc. The locals will know on a snap. The outsider will take longer and may never grasp the local sense of the expression.
2) What kind of tools (observation grids, semi-standard questionaire, diagrammed main topics, photos, audios, vids, etc.) did each researcher have? Are these tools designed and used to compare data? Upto what degree are you going to compare the 3 settings? Are you serious about being "being objective"? How about being accountable? Being able to track what you did, when, how and with whom?
Releyendo lo que está escrito. Sueno igual académico! Qué huevada. El desafío es que todos te puedan entender, o por lo menos los niños, y no sólo unos cuantos. Lo que uso ahora para explicar esto de emic y etic, es esto: cuando vamos a una cancha a jugar, están los que juegan de local y los que juegan de visitantes. El etnógrafo, que juega casi siempre de visitante, se presta los ojos, la mirada, de los que juegan de local. Así, puede entender las jugadas locales mejor. Por ahí va.
